Accountancy Award Categories 2023


The Awards are designed to showcase and celebrate finance talent across the region. The following award categories reflect the breadth of specialisms and roles across the profession, and enable talent to be recognised across the career span from Rising Star of the Year to Firm of the Year. The relevant period for work for the awards from April 2022 to April 2023

Deadline for nominations is Friday 31st March 2023

 

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS:

Accounting Technician of the Year

Eligibility: This award is open to those actively studying towards an Accounting Technician qualification, such as ATT or AAT. This award is for nominees who have made a significant impact to their employer’s or client’s business.

Judges will assess the nomination on the following areas:

  • Professional development and willingness to learn
  • Examples of innovation or new initiatives
  • Responsiveness to customer needs
  • Commitment and enthusiasm
  • Team working and flexible working skills

Rising Star Tax Adviser of the Year

Eligibility: This award is open to Tax Advisers who work in Tax (up to 5 years) and are part or fully qualified or are actively studying towards being qualified as a Tax Adviser or Accountant specialising in Tax.


Judges will assess the nomination on the following areas:

  • Professional development and willingness to learn
  • Examples of innovation or new initiatives
  • Commitment and enthusiasm
  • Team working and flexible work skills
  • Examples of client service excellence
  • Impact to firm or company
  • Technical ability

Finance Director of the Year - sponsored by Broad Chare Partners

Eligibility: This category is open to FD’s and CFO’s who have responsibility for all the financial strategies, procedures and activities within their company or organisation.

Judges will assess the nomination on the following areas:

  • Commitment and enthusiasm
  • Increased/sustained financial achievement for the company and/or clients
  • Added value to the business and/or clients
  • Leadership, staff development
  • Team working and approachability
  • Strong business planning and strategic overview
  • Evidence of working across departments to achieve financial growth

Rising Star Accountant of the Year - Sponsored by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants

Eligibility: This award is open to individuals currently studying towards a chartered accountancy qualification or newly qualified Chartered Accountants (up to 5 years). Nominees are required to demonstrate significant and growing impact to their employer’s or clients’ business.

Judges will assess the nomination on the following areas:

  • Professional development and willingness to learn
  • Examples of innovation or new initiatives
  • Commitment and enthusiasm
  • Team working and flexible working skills
  • Examples of any recent achievements for clients or the company
  • Examples of client service excellence
  • Impact to firm or company

Accountant of the Year - Sponsored by Swinburne Maddison LLP

Eligibility: This award is open to qualified, professional accountants from all sectors who occupy a lead role such as Financial Controller, Finance Manager, Supervisor or Senior.

Judges will assess the nomination on the following areas:

  • Examples of client service excellence
  • Impact to firm or company
  • Increased/sustained financial achievement for the company and/or clients
  • Added value to the business and/or clients
  • Continued Professional Development

TEAM AWARDS:

Business Finance Team of the Year

Eligibility: This award is open to teams of two or more people from commerce and industry.

Judges will assess the nomination on the following areas:

  • Examples of innovation or new initiatives
  • Commitment and enthusiasm
  • Ability to work well as a team
  • Increased performance, efficiency and effectiveness as a result of the team’s work
  • How your results have benefited your company and/or clients
  • Effective collaboration with other departments
  • Staff development and training opportunities
Tax Team of the Year

Eligibility: This award is open to teams of two or more people working in the field of tax. (Please note this category alternates annually with Tax Advisor of the Year)

Judges will assess the nomination on the following areas:

  • Examples of innovation or new initiatives
  • Commitment and enthusiasm
  • Ability to work well as a team
  • How your results have benefited your company and/or clients
  • Effective collaboration with other departments
  • Staff development and training opportunities
  • Professional conduct in relation to tax
  • Technical excellence
Public Services Finance Team of the Year

Eligibility: This award is open to teams of two or more people from public sector, not for profit and third sector organisations.

Judges will assess the nomination on the following areas:

  • Examples of innovation or new initiatives
  • Commitment and enthusiasm
  • Ability to work well as a team
  • Increased performance, efficiency and effectiveness as a result of the team’s work
  • How your results have benefited your company and/or clients
  • Effective collaboration with other departments
  • Staff development and training opportunities

Corporate Finance Deal of the Year

Eligibility: This award is open to corporate finance departments and corporate recovery departments operating within accountancy firms, smaller boutique corporate finance firms where qualified accountants account for the majority of professional staff and corporate financial advisers.

The nomination must show that the finance team has been instrumental in securing the deal for the client as well as showing evidence of:

  • Ability to work well as a team
  • Innovation in initiating the deal
  • How the deal has maximised benefit to the regional economy
  • Flexibility in job roles to ensure the end result
  • How the financial strength of all interested parties including advisors, customers, employees, financiers and owners is increased by the deal

FIRM AWARDS:

Accountancy Firm of the Year (Under 50 employees)

Eligibility: This award is for an Accountancy firm with an employee count of 50 or less, which has enjoyed an exceptional year and can demonstrate its outstanding achievements. The judges will be looking at a number of areas including, growth, innovation, client service and CSR

Judges will assess the nomination on the following areas:

  • Added value to the business and/or clients
  • Raised clients’ competitive advantage
  • Excellence in the delivery of client service
  • Business progress and improvement over the year
  • Provides a positive working environment
  • Sets itself apart from its competitors
  • Staff development and training opportunities
  • Examples of CSR
  • Regional impact

Accountancy Firm of the Year (Between 51-200 employees)

Eligibility: This award is for an Accountancy firm with an employee count of between 51 and 200 which has enjoyed an exceptional year and can demonstrate its outstanding achievements. The judges will be looking at a number of areas including, growth, innovation, client service and CSR

Judges will assess the nomination on the following areas:

  • Added value to clients
  • Raised clients’ competitive advantage
  • Excellence in the delivery of client service
  • Business progress and improvement over the year
  • Provides a positive working environment
  • Sets itself apart from its competitors
  • Staff development and training opportunities
  • Examples of CSR
  • Regional impact

SPECIAL RECOGNITION:

Outstanding Achievement - sponsored by Nigel Wright Group

Eligibility: This Award is for individuals who have shown significant achievement over many years and made an outstanding contribution to the accountancy profession or the company which they are part of.

There are no interviews taking place for this award as the winner is chosen by a committee.

The committee will be looking for demonstrations of superior working in the following areas:

  • Significant achievement over many years
  • Strategic development
  • Leadership
  • Regional impact
  • Contribution to the industry
